No surprise here, as THE MILL shares a montage of the broadcast and live experience for The Oscars. What an awesome project to be apart of, ranging from different elements such as lower thirds and video mortises, to the very vibrant and fun performance graphics.

With all the buzz around the Oscar-nominated feature films, we want to acknowledge the impressive VFX and motion graphics work present in the short films category. We’ve highlighted three animated short films up for a 2014 Oscar, selected for their unique approach to 2D and 3D animation. You can visit the Oscar website for the full list of nominees.

 Feral trailer
Feral child meets My Fair Lady in this 2D animated short by Daniel Sousa and Dan Golden. To create the ethereal animation, Sousa first started in Flash, retracing the drawings by hand before coloring and compositing the images in After Effects. We’ve posted the full trailer and breakdown to show the extensive efforts that went into the film.

 Mr Hublot Trailer # 1
Imagine if Pixar did steampunk, and you’ve got “Mr. Hublot” by Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares. In this film, opposites attract between a man with OCD and his oversized, blundering dog. What this short film may lack in compelling narrative, it makes up in character design, lighting, and compositing. The plot themes in “Mr. Hublot” are echoed in a recent Digital Canvas post, “Out of Bounds” another animated short created with 2D and 3D animation.

This short by Lauren MacMullan and Dorothy McKim gives audiences a heavy dose of Mickey Mouse nostalgia. With old-timey music, black and white “rubber hose” style animation, and historic Mickey Mouse cast characters, we are initially met with a quaint blast from the past. Looks, however, can be deceiving. [Spoiler alert!] This classic Mickey Mouse cartoon quickly turns contemporary, as the characters break the fourth wall in a Mickey vs. Villain struggle over Minnie. What was first quaint and predictable turns out to be a clever mashup of classic and modern.
